After assembling the stage design, the paper image will be 23 meters high and 33 meters wide, the festival officials reported on Wednesday.
This year the opera “Madame Butterfly” by Giacomo Puccini will be staged in Bregenz. For this purpose, a new stage set will be set up in Lake Constance. The paper image is composed of 117 scenery parts that are currently being built in an assembly hall in Lauterach in Vorarlberg.
In fact, the piece of paper is made of steel, styrofoam, wood and facade plaster. “The particular challenge is to make the sheet of paper appear light, almost weightless and appear to be floating on the water, even though it actually weighs around 300 tons,” explained Technology Director Wolfgang Urstadt.
The Bregenz Festival is known worldwide for its monumental stage sets. In 2008, the ambience was also used during filming for the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace”. The main pieces of the festival are always played for two years.
Almost 220,000 tickets are available for the opera performances from July 20 to August 21 this year. The organizers announced that there are still enough places on all dates.
