Adapted from the play by Samuel D. Hunter (2012), The Whale is set in a Mormon town in Idaho. Charlie, a morbidly obese man weighing 600 pounds, hides in his apartment and feeds, hoping to die. He is desperate to reconnect with his daughter. Soon, he befriends a sharp-tongued and very unhappy teenager.
Produced by studio A24, the film marks the return of Darren Aronofsky behind the camera 5 years after Mother! with Jennifer Lawrence. And especially that of Brendan Fraser, unrecognizable, in a leading role. His character weighs 270 kilos in this film. The actor had to wear many prostheses for this role.
The film will be released in France on February 22, 2023, in the middle of the awards season in the United States. Note, Brendan Fraser will also appear in the cast of Martin Scorsese’s film, Killers of the Flower Moon.
