The Bridgerton Chronicle is known for welcoming actresses and actors from various backgrounds and also belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. But before finding success with the Netflix series, all was not always rosy.
It’s a story all too commonly experienced by people who identify as belonging to the LGBTQ+ community. And Golda Rosheuvel, who plays Queen Charlotte in The Bridgerton Chronicle – always very fond of gossip – is no exception. Early in her career, she was advised by a lesbian director to stay in the closet.
The actress recounts this episode of her life in the podcast of variety. “We were talking about being out and proud and representing and if I had to say I’m gay in interviews“says Golda Rosheuvel.
And it was an absolute no: “You absolutely shouldn’t do that. It would ruin your acting career.” I would rather lose a job than not be true to myself. I’d rather not work in an industry that doesn’t accept me. It’s just not how I was raised. Coming from her, a lesbian director, I was flabbergasted.
Golda Rosheuvel, who was best known as a stage actress in the UK, saw her career receive a royal boost with her role in Bridgerton. The actress will also receive an award this weekend in New York at a gala for the Human Rights Campaign, the LGBTQ+ civil rights organization.
“I’m out and proud” she says. “My sexuality is really important to me in terms of existence, knowing that I am important. I am as important as anyone on the planet. Do you understand what I mean? My partner [l’auteure Shireen Mula, ndlr] always says, ‘Just the fact that you’re on screen in Bridgerton as a black, mixed-race, cisgender, lesbian playing England’s first black queen. The fact that you are here is huge.“
