Brilliant Hrubesch debut: HSV declares war in the ascent race

Brilliant Hrubesch debut
HSV with challenge in the ascent race

With interim coach and HSV icon Horst Hrubesch, things are going again at the Hanseatic League. In a duel with the traditional club from Nuremberg, the home side ignite an offensive fireworks display. In addition, there is hope that the promotion to the Bundesliga can still succeed.

“Hotte” brings hope back: At the debut of new coach Horst Hrubesch, Hamburger SV reported back impressively in the fight for promotion. Club legend Hrubesch celebrated a perfect debut in a 5: 2 (3: 1) home win against 1. FC Nürnberg and can again believe in the return to the Bundesliga. Asger Sörensen (30th, own goal), Bakery Jatta (37th), Simon Terodde (45th + 2 / 80th, penalty kick) and Sonny Kittel (76th) scored for the convincing HSV. The goals of Erik Schuranow (41st) and Linus Rosenlöcher (89th) were too few for the club.

With the first three after five games without a win, HSV improved to fourth place in the table, the team from Hrubesch – affectionately known as “Hotte” on the Elbe – shortened the gap to SpVgg Greuther Fürth to third to three points and at least hopes for the relegation again.

Holstein Kiel had previously escaped HSV. Thanks to veteran Fin Bartels, the Schleswig-Holsteiners also won their penultimate catch-up game after another corona quarantine against Hannover 96 with 1-0 and climbed to second place. The storks are thus very close to the rise, which can hardly be taken from the sovereign championship leader VfL Bochum.

“We’re still alive,” said Hrubesch, who was installed as the successor to Daniel Thioune a week ago, before the game and promised that his team would “scratch, bite, accelerate”. Only one victory counted – but the pressure was noticeable on the Hamburgers at first, the efforts lacked precision.

Terodde puts together a double pack

The HSV needed to dig into the game. When things went fast, Robin Meißner simply pulled the trigger straight away – his shot was deflected into the goal by Sörensen. Hrubesch, who made five changes compared to the 1-1 draw against Karlsruher SC and helped Meißner to make his starting eleven, saw a significantly better HSV after the opening goal. Jatta took advantage of the strong phase ice cold to make it 2-0. A mistake by Sven Ulreich, who could only clear a long-range shot from Johannes Geis forward, enabled Schuranow to hit the next goal – and briefly brought hectic into the game of the Hamburgers.

But then top striker Terodde struck again. The 33-year-old stood where a center forward has to be and had no trouble pushing the ball into the goal from close range. As a result, HSV did not risk too much and tried above all to stand defensively and to set pinpricks on counterattacks. Like Meißner, who only hit the bar after a great action (62nd). But Nuremberg also remained dangerous. Shortly thereafter, HSV keeper Ulreich steered an attempt by Tom Krauss to the crossbar (73rd) with a great parade – before Kittel increased for Hamburg. Nuremberg expert Terodde scored for the second time and has now scored eight times in his last seven second division games against the club.
