He became known as Professor Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” films: British actor Michael Gambon has died at the age of 82.

His publicist’s office confirmed Michael Gambon’s death on Thursday at the request of the German Press Agency in London. He was 82 years old.

The British actor with Irish roots was best known for his role as Professor Albus Dumbledore, the head of the Hogwarts magic school. He shared the role of Dumbledore with Richard Harris, who played the wizard in the first two films.

From the third film in 2004 (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”), Gambon finally took on the role in a total of six films.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family told the British news agency PA. Her husband and father died peacefully in hospital after contracting pneumonia with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his side.

Gambon appeared in several films and also in the series “Maigret” and “The Singing Detective”. In 1992 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
