In 1987 Tracy Scholes was the first female bus driver on the bus routes in Manchester, in the north-west of Great Britain. 34 years later, the British woman has lost her job – because she is too small to drive the latest bus model, as the British newspaper “Guardian” reports.
Tracy Scholes is only 1.52 meters tall. In order to be able to see the exterior mirrors, she would have to lean backwards – but then her feet would no longer be able to touch the pedals. The 57-year-old complained about this fact to her employer, the bus company Go North West. She was then released first, followed by dismissal.
The company had offered her alternatives, but the terms were not acceptable to her.
Thousands of Britons support bus pioneer
«I have three children, am a widow and have to pay off a mortgage. I can’t lose my wages, “the British woman is quoted as saying in the Guardian. The dismissal broke her heart because she had struggled for years as a woman in a men’s business: “I tolerated comments, sexist remarks and much more. I never complained to management. I solved it for myself and kept going. ”
Scholes’ expulsion creates a lot of resistance in England. Many are outraged and want to help. To this end, a petition has been launched so that Manchester’s first female bus driver can get behind the wheel again. More than 13,000 people have already signed the petition.
Bus company defends itself
A spokesman for the bus company describes Tracy Scholes as a valued team member. Numerous offers have been made to keep her in the company. But she rejected them all. The company decided on the design of the new buses in consultation with trade unions. Except for Scholes, there were no problems with the new buses, not even for people of a similar height. «It is difficult to find committed, experienced and hardworking bus drivers. We would never act lightly in such a situation », the spokesman is quoted as saying.
With a height of 1.52 meters, Tracy Scholes is not considered short. Adults are only considered to be short if they are less than 1.50. (rsp)
