Carlos Sainz celebrates his 1st victory at Silverstone after his 1st pole. Sergio Perez is second after an incredible comeback.

The racing accident

At the Silverstone GP there was a brutal crash after the start. The race was restarted after a long break.

The pedestal

Carlos Sainz can celebrate a GP victory for the first time. The Spaniard in the Ferrari benefited from a scene on lap 39: Esteban Ocon had to leave his car on the track after a defect, there was a safety car phase.

Charles Leclerc was in the lead at the time and was not pitted. Sainz was second, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez behind them all switched to soft tires with 12 laps to go. Sainz then easily passed Leclerc in a playful way, the Monegasse defended himself against the other opponents as best he could, but ended up next to the podium.

Perez, who started 4th, complained about damage to the front wing after the restart because he had messed with Leclerc. The Mexican in the Red Bull had to pit and ended up at the back of the field. A strong race to catch up resulted in second place. Lewis Hamilton, who completed the podium, had meanwhile smelled a rat: The eight-time Silverstone winner collected the first leading laps for Mercedes this season from the 25th lap.

The World Cup leader

Max Verstappen should definitely have planned more for this race. Having started from second place, the Red Bull driver was in the lead after 10 laps and seemed to be pulling away. A defect destroyed its aerodynamics less than 2 laps later, as a result the world championship leader drove around 2 seconds per lap slower and finally finished 7th.

The Alfa Romeo team

Guanyu Zhou was involved in the initial crash, slid headfirst and ended up flying over the tire barriers. However, the Chinese showed up in the Alfa Romeo pits after the end of the race and was doing well. Valtteri Bottas didn’t finish his car either. A technical defect on lap 21 meant that the Finn had to retire.

This is how it goes

July is full of races in Formula 1 this year: next weekend the pilots will drive in Austria (July 9th), after a week’s break they will continue in France (July 24th). This is followed by the GP at the Hungaroring (July 31).
