British police are investigating a package containing uranium seized at Heathrow Airport

British police said on Tuesday January 10 that they had opened an investigation after the seizure of a package containing uranium at Heathrow airport in London. The discovery occurred Dec. 29 during a routine check by border services officers, police said. According to the British tabloid The Sunwhich was the first to report on this seizure, the parcel came from Pakistan and arrived in England on board a plane which took off from Oman.

The uranium was found in a shipment of scrap metal and investigators are investigating whether this discovery was the result of a “Mishandling” in Pakistan, the BBC reported. “I would like to reassure the population: the quantity of contaminated material was extremely low and its expertise concluded that it presented no danger for the population”Police Commander Richard Smith told the British press. “Although our investigation is continuing, this package does not appear to be linked to any direct threat based on our latest investigations”he added.
