Preparations for the coronation of Charles III. are in full swing in the UK. The throne is also brought into shape.

The traditions of the British royal family are always pompously celebrated in the United Kingdom – including on May 6th. If Charles III. crowned on this day, the monarch sits on a two meter high throne dating back to 1296. But first it will be restored by Krista Blessley.

Blessley has spent several months restoring fragile elements of the throne. It is made of gilded oak and decorated with gold ornaments and paintings. Over the centuries, however, a large part of it has flaked off. According to Blessley, English art from the Middle Ages has only rarely been preserved. “This makes the throne an outstanding example of craftsmanship that no longer exists today,” explains the restorer.

A royal chair with history

King Edward I commissioned the throne in 1296. Elizabeth II last took her place on the king’s chair in 1953. Since then it has been kept in a chapel in Westminster Abbey – well shielded from the public.

A few days before the coronation, the throne is provided with the “Stone of Scone”. Its history is said to go back to Jacob from the Old Testament, the progenitor of the people of Israel. The stone’s mythological significance underscores the religious component of the coronation. With Charles III the crown will be placed on the 39th monarch on the throne in May.
