LONDON, Aug 26 (Reuters) – Britney Spears returns to the limelight with the release on Friday of a duet with Elton John, “Hold Me Closer”, the first title in six years for the American star whose guardianship of 13 years ended in 2021.

The interpreter of “Toxic” and “Womanizer” had aroused her fans by revealing on social networks the cover of the dance cover of “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John.

“Oki doki… my first song in 6 years. It’s really cool to sing with one of the signatures of our time,” she wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

The #WelcomeBackBritney hashtag was among the most popular on Twitter on Friday. Within hours of its release, the track topped the US and UK iTunes charts.

Last November, Britney Spears obtained the lifting of the guardianship to which she had been subject for 13 years.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have had the chance to work with Britney Spears,” said Elton John.

“She’s truly an icon, one of the greatest pop stars of all time, and she sounds amazing on this record. I love her dearly and I’m thrilled with what we’ve created together,” said he added. (Report Marie-Louise Gumuchian; French version Valentine Baldassari, edited by Sophie Louet)
