Princess Diana would have turned 60 on July 1st, 2021. Now US pop star Britney Spears is taking sides for the British woman. Does she see anything in common between herself and the former Princess of Wales?
The sudden death of Princess Diana († 36) touched the whole world in 1997. Now US pop star Britney Spears (39) speaks out and raves about the grace and elegance of Diana on social media.
Britney Spears: “She never wanted to be queen”
The 39-year-old posted a picture of the former Princess of Wales on her Instagram account. The ex-wife of Prince Charles (72) looks to the side in the photo, she is wearing a white robe and a diadem. The latter is the famous “love knot”, a piece of jewelry which Queen Elizabeth regularly lent to her daughter-in-law and which is said to have been one of the princess’s favorite pieces. The photo was taken in March 1983 at a banquet in the New Zealand city of Auckland by the Tanzanian photographer Anwar Hussein (83). At this point, Princess Diana was on a six-week trip to Australia and New Zealand with her husband, Prince Charles.
“She never wanted to be queen … she wanted to be the heart of the people,” writes Britney Spears about her post. In the following she raves about the elegance of the princess: “She had more than just class. She was a genius, from the way she spoke to her motherly love for her children. [Sie war] the epitome of self-forgetfulness about their own power. 750 million people watched their wedding in front of the television. “In addition to the picture of Diana, the 39-year-old shares another photo with her almost 30 million subscribers. This shows crowds of people apparently cheering for the princess.
Britney Spears ends her homage to Diana with the statement: “She will always be remembered as one of the most extraordinary women”.
Stars fight for the singer
In recent years, the US pop star has appeared again and again in the media, as father Jamie Spears has been the guardian of the 39-year-old since 2008. In August 2020, the singer tried to end this, but a court denied the application. Her father, among others, also manages her assets. Under the hashtag #FreeBritney, stars such as Miley Cyrus (28), Cher (75) and Paris Hilton (40) campaign for the musician’s self-determination in addition to the US-American Civil Rights Union. In February 2021, the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” was published, which thematizes the singer’s career and the ongoing legal battle with her father.
Does Britney Spears see parallels between her own guardianship and the life of the former Princess of Wales and therefore take sides with Diana? The then heir to the throne is said to have told her biographer Andrew Morton (68) that she felt like “a prisoner” in the British royal family.
