Britons are counting on hybrid working to reduce the cost of living


As many as 75% of workers think their employers should offer them hybrid working to help them tackle the cost of living crisis, according to new research from Greenhouse.

In any case, this is revealed by a survey of 1,000 British workers by the company specializing in recruitment software Greenhouse. The flexible work environment is thus among the main advantages cited by the workers surveyed, along with job security and a high salary.

Hybrid working to retain talent

Going to the office actually involves costs. For example, we can note travel costs, but also childcare costs if applicable and additional expenses (lunch, coffee, etc.).

Combined with rising rents and loans, separating work and private life has become a financial challenge for many employees.

“This study shows in particular that employees believe that flexible working should be considered in the face of the cost of living crisis. Otherwise, companies risk losing talent”, summarizes Colm O’Cuinneain, Managing Director of Greenhouse EMEA.

The fear of a recession

In recent months, inflation has impacted nearly every aspect of people’s lives, from rising gas prices to rising costs of living in general. Economic pressure is now filtering into the job market, with a number of major tech companies recently announcing hiring freezes and layoffs.

Many professionals therefore believe that their employers should better support them in these uncertain times, and in particular if the latter require them to travel to their place of work.

The survey also reports that 75% of employees surveyed think the UK is heading for a recession. Yet despite this negative economic outlook, they are not hopeless about their future – 47% believe they will see their salary increase this year, according to Greenhouse, suggesting that the power remains in the hands of employees for the time being.
