Bronchiolitis epidemic and tensions in pediatrics: the cry of alarm from health professionals

Pediatricians are crying out to Emmanuel Macron as the bronchiolitis epidemic hits France. Due to the saturation of pediatric emergencies, children cannot be accommodated properly. Some must even be transferred to another region, far from that of their parents, warns a pediatrician on Europe 1.

4,000 pediatricians have issued a cry of alarm to Emmanuel Macron. They all denounce the saturation of pediatric emergencies because the bronchiolitis epidemic has hit France. Concretely, this represents hospitalizations of children in unsuitable services, transfers to regions far from their parents’ homes, postponements of surgical operations, premature discharge from hospital.

Other diseases to be treated in parallel

An unprecedented situation, according to this pediatrician in Île-de-France: “when children need hospitalization in intensive care, we have no room and we are forced to transfer the children to other intensive care units outside the region. It means a child who has consulted at Versailles leaves for Reims, for the parents it is inhuman to have their child hospitalized in intensive care 200 kilometers from their place of residence.

This nurse is very worried, especially since the peak of this epidemic is far from being reached and we must continue to treat other epidemics such as influenza, Covid or even gastroenteritis in parallel. And this, even though the services are already bloodless. So much so that the medical and paramedical staff are asking the President of the Republic for urgent, long-term measures, staff and beds in intensive care to properly accommodate children.
