“Brothers in arms”: the atavism of violence

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – MUST SEE

Settled in Brest with their mother for many years, two brothers of Serbian origin live in anticipation of a return to the country, an undesirable prospect for one of them, Emilijan, who only dreams of staying in France with his girlfriend. Barely out of prison, where he was serving a sentence after a murder resulting from a gear caused by a crime committed by the two brothers when they were children, their uncle tries both to compromise them in shady activities and to prepare for a return home.

Sylvain Labrosse’s first feature film, Brothers in arms is part of both family tragedy and film noir. Denouncing the deadly force of a patriarchal logic and an atavistic transmission of violence, he describes the struggle of a young man fighting against the fatality of blood ties. The story is thus nourished by a suspense (will Emilijan escape his curse?) Made credible by a certain documentary precision (the environment described is that of the dockers of Brest) and the conviction of the actors.
