Brown bear dies when changing tracking device in northern Italy

This is not F43, but a nice specimen too: A female brown bear with cubs in the Dinaric Alps in Slovenia.

(dpa) A brown bear has died in a routine operation after being captured in northern Italy. The authorities picked up the animal on Tuesday night in the Conceital (Val di Concei) in the municipality of Ledro, not far from the northern tip of Lake Garda, the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino) announced. The experts therefore wanted to exchange the bear’s tracking transmitter, which was listed as F 43. According to initial findings, the approximately four-year-old animal died as a result of being positioned in the trap when the anesthetic began to take effect. Attempts at resuscitation failed.

According to their own statements, the authorities recently monitored the bear more intensively. She was considered trusting to humans, which is why attempts were made again and again to deter her. If problem bears are monitored more closely and attempts are made to change their behavior, “accidents” like the current one could happen, the province said.

Last year, the experts in Trentino counted at least 69 young or adult bears, some of which came from surrounding regions such as South Tyrol, Friuli-Venezia Giulia or Austria. They also estimate that nine to ten new bear cubs were added. According to the authorities, the bear growth trend is pointing upwards. Again and again the animals appear in residential areas, rummage through the rubbish or approach people. If you meet a bear, keep calm, slowly keep your distance, but not run away.
