Bruce Darnell talks about his difficult childhood in the USA: “Every time I fly there, I feel incredibly foreign.”

The choreographer and presenter Bruce Darnell (66) has been living in Germany for decades – even though he grew up in the US state of Colorado. In an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” he gave more insights into his inner life and explained why he turned his back on his home country: “The USA chapter as a home is definitely closed for me.”

His mother died in April 2023, so there is no longer any hope of reconciliation. He hasn’t had any real connection to the USA for five years: “Every time I fly there, I feel incredibly foreign.” In general, the concept of home is “very complicated” for him. He never received this feeling from his family: “I can’t spell the word home. Where I am and feel comfortable is home for me.”

Bruce Darnell: “I actually escaped”

As in previous interviews, Darnell also spoke to “NOZ” about his difficult childhood. Back then, he didn’t experience as much security or get what you need as a child from his parents and to this day he hasn’t met his biological father. “Nevertheless, I got through it quite well and also did therapy.”

His time in the US Army, where he served as a paratrooper for six years from 1974, helped him to come to terms with it: “I actually fled to experience order, security and a family in the army. That might sound crazy, But for me it was a new chance in life.” There he experienced discipline that has accompanied him throughout his life to this day and with which he has overcome all hurdles.

Darnell came to Germany after his time in the army and began his modeling career in Munich in the early 1980s. Since 1990 he has also worked as a choreographer and catwalk trainer. In 2006 he started his TV career as a juror on the ProSieben casting show “Germany’s Next Top Model”.
