Bruce Springsteen is getting his own building at Monmouth University that will focus on US music. The singer feels honored.

A building named after Bruce Springsteen (74) is being built at Monmouth University in New Jersey: the “Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music”. The musician made the announcement on Wednesday at a special ceremony at the university.

Great responsibility for the musician

“When I was 19, I played on these very steps out here,” the singer recalled at the event. But getting a building with your own name is also a tricky thing. “Because I’m still alive,” joked the 74-year-old. He is fully aware of the great responsibility that this entails: “All I can say is that I will try to do my best for the rest of my life not to embarrass the building.”

The building is said to be 30,000 square meters in size and was designed by the architectural firm Cookfox, This is what it says on the archive’s official website. It will be located not far from where Springsteen wrote his breakthrough hit “Born to Run” nearly 50 years ago. The building is expected to cost $45 million. Two thirds of the money has already been collected through a campaign.

A place of music history

A few years ago, Springsteen handed over his archive materials to the university, and now they are getting their own archive. The Center for American Music will exhibit some of the exhibits. In addition, rare film material, stories about the star or interviews with him will be available. There will also be small concerts, educational workshops, symposiums, lectures and other public education programs.
