Bruce Toussaint: “TV is a crash test for candidates”

The journalist, who replaced Jean-Jacques Bourdin at the helm of the political program La France dans les yeux, Thursday March 10 at 8:50 p.m. on BFMTV, discusses the specificities of this campaign in the final stretch before the presidential election.

What differentiates France in the eyes other political shows?

Bruce Toussaint: The exercise which consists in giving the floor to anonymous people to question the presidential candidates is becoming rare on television and that is a shame. We completely assume this direct grip and this complete approach. TV is a crash test for candidates and it gives them good practice if they want to face Putin later !

How do you view this campaign?

We say she’s sluggish but it’s probably becauseEmmanuel Macron has not yet asserted its position*. It distorts the rhythm. In the previous ballot, all the candidates were already in the race on that date. I have the feeling that the French are not yet passionate about this campaign.

Which candidate do you think is running the best campaign so far?

The candidate who is shaking up this campaign is Eric Zemmour. He is credited with 15% of voting intentions. How far will he go? He is the great uncertainty of this election. We are faced with a phenomenon.

Karine Le Marchand (M6), Cyril Hanouna (C8) or Magali Berdah (YouTube) offer a different approach to politics. What do you think ?

I did not see what Magali Berdah. As for Karine LeMarchand, I’m a big fan of his shows. It allows you to know the candidates differently. When we know that we vote as much for a project as for a personality, his proposal makes sense. As for Cyril Hanouna, I find it excellent. Each has its place. Cyril is aimed at a young audience who he can make want to vote, that’s important.

Have you made your choice ?

No, and I’m deep in thought. I’m so obsessed with a form of intellectual honesty that I even wonder if I should vote. In this, I share the point of view of Jean-Michel Aphatie. It’s a die-hard way of respecting neutrality.

Do you support or dissociate yourself from Jean-Jacques Bourdin?

Same answer as before: I am in the most absolute neutrality. There are investigations in progress, it is not for me to express myself on this subject.
