I had a pretty smart, well-structured speech in exactly five minutes. » On the set of the showC mediaon France 5, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, explains that he tested ChatGPT – which is now based on GPT 4. He thus asked artificial intelligence to write him a speech “on Xi Jinping’s China in 2023“.

It’s quite fascinating“, he confesses before admitting that, “20 years ago, it would have taken me three or four hours to make this speech“.

Bruno Le Maire emphasizes that he has some experience in the field since he himself was “speech writer“having written speeches for Dominique de Villepin or Jacques Chirac”for years“.

Regulate ChatGPT in France, not ban

The Minister of the Economy is taking advantage of his time on the air to develop his thoughts on the uses that can be had of a tool like ChatGPT. “I think that we must supervise very rigorously“. He believes that “it poses a lot of ethical difficulties, a lot of difficulties on the way we are going to reflect on the world, on which we are going to impose a thought“.

On the other hand, he does not say he is in favor of a blocking of ChatGPT as we have seen very recently in Italy. “I don’t think this is the right solution. [..] I think we must very quickly start thinking about the best possible regulation of ChatGPT. It must be carried out at national and European level.»

Bruno Le Maire mentions safeguards to be established to regulate the remuneration of press articles and researchers who will be used to feed the databases of these AIs. Ditto for the way in which the sources are indicated. “These are reflections that must be carried out to frame ChatGPT.»

Bruno Le Maire against Midjourney

The Minister of the Economy is then confronted with an image generated by Midjourney and showing Pope Francis dressed in a big white down jacket. An image that can make you laugh, but Bruno Le Maire is suspicious. “It will be much less funny when you have a political character who will be made to make racist or homophobic remarks without specifying that it is a montage“.

He also warns of potential “very violent caricatures of a public figure or any private individual“. He insists once again on the importance of supervision in his eyes and also wishes to find ways to support research and French and European companies in this sector.

As a reminder, it is good to specify that there are certain methods to spot the images generated by Midjourney so as not to confuse them with real photos. The exercise remains complex all the same and there is no doubt that the subject will come up regularly on the table, on social networks in particular.
