Flagship presenter of the France 2 television news in the 1990s, Bruno Masure was ousted by the channel on October 2, 1997. According to him, his lack of enthusiasm in dealing with the disappearance of Lady Diana would be the cause.
His death shocked many… Sunday, August 31, 1997, after a chase with paparazzi, Lady Diana died in a car accident, in Paris, at the age of 36. In an interview given to Tele-Leisure, Bruno Masure remembered his disappearance. “This August 31, 1997… It was I who should have presented the 1 p.m., in addition to the 8 p.m.! It was planned like that. But, when i reported to the newsroom in the morning, my name had disappeared from the roster. I was replaced…“According to the presenter, his management would not have appreciated his lack of eagerness at the announcement of the death of Lady Diana….
Bruno Masure recalled: “I was sleeping the sleep of the righteous when I received a call from an editorial assistant informing me of the Princess’ death. I was on duty. I replied that it was very sad news… and I hung up.“So he didn’t feel it was anything significant and had no idea the death of Princes William and Harry’s mother would make headlines.”For me, it was a non-event, little more than a news item. Diana was not on the succession list of the royal family of England. She wasn’t much to me anymore. I probably added a little in bad faith…“, he added.
Bruno Masure: “I think we’ve done too much”
Spread at noon, the news star, however, presented the 8 p.m. newspaper. Not convinced, he confided today: “I said to myself that we had been very bad. Much less on One than on Two. We interviewed people who had neither seen nor heard anything. Journalistically, I was ashamed of what was on the air that day. I remember the head of Arlette Chabot, then director of information. When I passed her in the hallways, she seemed as devastated as if she had learned of the death of a loved one. I found it really too much. Worst newscast of my career.“After assuring that he did not want to review these archives, Bruno Masure slipped:”I understand that Diana’s death has caused a stir, but I think we have done too much.In conclusion, he added:I was less and less in agreement with the way information was processed. I felt that I was very close to the exit door. When they saw the way I reacted, that surely reinforced the management’s intention to ‘burden me.’“
