Since Michel Barnier was appointed Prime Minister on September 5, the announcement of his government has been long awaited: it has now been done. Alongside well-known figures from the Attal government, who are keeping their portfolios or changing ministries, new faces are making their entrance this Saturday, September 21. Among them, the new Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau. But could the politician have a link with the former Minister of Higher Education and Research, Sylvie Retailleau? Since they both share the same last name, many people are asking questions. We can enlighten you: there is no family link between the Republican and the independent politician.
Appointed on May 20, 2022 in the Borne government, the former president and dean of the Faculty of Sciences at Paris-Sud University is originally from the South of France. Born in Nice to a watchmaker-jeweler father and a secretary mother, Sylvie Retailleau does not share the opinions of her namesake who is proud of her Vendée roots: she had notably expressed her disagreement with the vote on the immigration law in December 2023, while Bruno Retailleau judged for his part that the text did not go far enough. Sylvie Retailleau was replaced by Patrick Hetzel, a former Academy rector from Alsace known to be close to the new Prime Minister. Like the new Minister of the Interior, Patrick Hetzel is a Republican who had opposed marriage for all.

Bruno Retailleau: a convinced anti-Macronist in government
In addition to the strong presence of ministers from a party that came fourth in the last legislative elections, some observers were surprised by the announcement of the personalities chosen by Michel Barnier to form his government. Bruno Retailleau, in particular, distinguished himself by his very virulent remarks with regard to the policy pursued by the head of state. “I accuse the President of the Republic of having a Gribouille policy. […] Emmanuel Macronit’s Tartuffe!” had asserted the politician in the columns of the Figaro. In an interview published on the LR website on May 16, 2024, the new Minister of the Interior castigated “egocentrism” of the president, accusing him of having put France “on the edge of chaos”… A very critical position towards Emmanuel Macron which constitutes another of his common points with the new Prime Minister, Michel Barnier.
