Budapest has three months to apply measures likely to protect European funds from any risk of corruption.

The noose is tightening around Viktor Orban’s Hungary. At the end of several months of exchanges with Budapest, the Commission addressed Sunday to the Council – ie to the Member States – its recommendations intended to protect the funds of the Union in this country where endemic corruption is rampant. This is a first in the EU. The new so-called conditionality mechanism on the rule of law was put in place in January 2021 and the Court of Justice, then seized by Budapest and Warsaw, found nothing wrong with it. The procedure against Hungary was launched last April. The step taken on Sunday is crucial. In absolute terms at least.
