Over the years, some categories have gained exemptions that allow them to postpone their service or perform a shorter service, including Olympic and Asian Games medalists, and musicians and classical dancers who win top prizes. of certain competitions. Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup, who spoke at the parliamentary session, said that by allowing BTS to continue performing, the military could serve national interests without affecting personnel resources already reduced due to the low birth rate. “Even if they join the army, there would be a way to give them a chance to train and perform together if there are concerts scheduled overseas,” said Lee Jong-up. “As many people greatly appreciate [les artistes servants] in the military, it could help boost their popularity even more,” adds the Minister. BTS management Big Hit did not respond to a request for comment.
Already in April, a Big Hit official said that some members were spending a “difficult time” due to the uncertainties related to the parliamentary debate, calling for a decision. Then, the group made up of seven singer-dancers announced last June a break from their musical activities to pursue solo projects, pleading exhaustion and denouncing the “star system”.
