6.1% deficit for the year 2024 compared to 4.4% provided for by the finance law, how could France’s budget explode so much, without anyone saying or seeing it? This is the question that haunts opposition parliamentarians who accuse Bruno Le Maire of being responsible for this situation.
How could France’s budget explode so much? A question that several opposition parliamentarians are asking themselves. At the request of Eric Ciotti and the Socialist Party, a commission of inquiry into the slippage in public finances should see the light of day this week.
“In reality, there was a statistical error, because our forecast model is obsolete”
The deputies seek to determine whether Bruno Le Maire, former Minister of the Economy, “hid certain documents to hide the real budget deficit”. The socialist Philippe Brun, at the origin of this request, justifies himself: “I have nothing against Bruno Le Maire, he is just the Minister of Finance who left a country with a budget which slipped by two points of GDP “This is unheard of since 1945 and it is an inexplicable and unexplained hole, at least according to the person in charge.”
Questioned by Europe 1, an advisor to Bruno Le Maire in Bercy explains the situation: “In reality, there was a statistical error, because our forecast model is obsolete. Since Covid, growth has generated less tax revenue.” And adds: “We noticed it at the beginning of 2024, we raised the alarm, we asked for an amended finance bill, but we were not listened to,” he concludes.
Parliamentarians therefore want to know if Emmanuel Macron was aware of this slip-up and if he let it happen.
