Thousands of police officers gathered in Berlin on May 1st

The police are once again preparing for May 1st in Berlin. More than 3,000 security forces are already on duty on the eve of Labor Day. On Wednesday there are significantly more, after all there is “a very complex meeting situation”. That seems like an understatement.
In Berlin, around 3,000 police forces will accompany several meetings on the eve of May Day. On Wednesday there would be significantly more, said a spokeswoman for the Berlin police. The police union expects up to 6,000 emergency services in Berlin. There is support from more than 20 units from across Germany.
“We have a very complex assembly situation tomorrow,” said the police spokeswoman, referring to several large demonstrations. This included a demonstration by the union, a procession through the Grunewald and the traditional May 1st demonstration in the Neukölln district.
This year there is a “potpourri of topics” that extremists could use to legitimize crimes, the police union said. Among other things, the situation in Gaza and measures surrounding the arrest of the RAF terrorist Daniela Klette played a major role. Many pro-Palestinian demonstrators are also expected on Wednesday, said the police spokeswoman.
If the restrictions on gatherings are violated or if crimes are committed, the police will intervene consistently and immediately, it said. This included shouting certain slogans, burning dolls or flags and displaying the flags of banned associations. In the call for the May 1st demonstration on Wednesday evening, the organizers said: “From Ukraine, to Yemen and Congo, to Kurdistan and Palestine – bombs are falling on workers and their children everywhere.”
Faeser warns against Islamists and left-wing extremists
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has already warned of riots in German cities. “The police must take tough action immediately if there are riots, acts of violence and hatred of Jews on our streets around May 1st,” said Faeser to the editorial network Germany.
The authorities are concerned about the heated atmosphere caused by the Middle East conflict, particularly the war in the Gaza Strip. “We will continue to resolutely oppose any attempt to carry out the conflicts in the Middle East on our streets as a result of Hamas’ murderous terror against Israel,” said Faeser. She pointed out that since the attack on Israel by the radical Islamic terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, 159 police officers have been injured in such demonstrations in Berlin alone. “We won’t accept that. We will enforce the rule of law,” the SPD politician made clear.
With regard to Klette’s imprisonment in February, the Interior Minister added: “Possible further solidarity actions by the left-wing extremist scene because of the arrest of the RAF terrorist who went into hiding are also completely unacceptable.” In this context, no one should forget: “The RAF brutally murdered 34 people. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, to glorify.”
