OUAGADOUGOU (Reuters) – Captain Ibrahim Traore was formally appointed transitional president of Burkina Faso on Friday, two weeks after leading a coup and deposing Paul-Henri Damiba, author of a previous coup in January.
His appointment was endorsed by some 300 delegates – military officials, political parties and civil society representatives – during talks aimed at adopting a transitional charter.
Delegates adopted an article making the leader of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, the name of the ruling military junta, Burkina Faso’s transitional president, four sources at the meeting said. .
Ibrahim Traoré has pledged to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional order by July 2024.
The transition charter proposed by the new junta is aligned with the previous one and provides that the interim president will not be able to stand in the presidential, legislative and municipal elections marking the end of his term.
