Heavy DTM crash: David Schumacher in the hospital

The DTM season finale at Hockenheim is overshadowed by a serious accident involving six people. Some of the drivers affected, including David Schumacher, have to go to the hospital. The accident for championship candidate Thomas Preining is particularly bitter.

David Schumacher, Rolf Ineichen from Switzerland and Norwegian Dennis Olsen, who were involved in a serious accident at the DTM season finale in Hockenheim, have been taken to the hospital for further examinations. A DTM spokeswoman confirmed this to the sports information service. In addition to Ralf Schumacher’s son David, Olsen and Ineichen, who was transported by helicopter because of a possible back injury, three other drivers were involved in the accident who, according to initial information, were uninjured.

Championship candidate Thomas Preining from Austria was eliminated in the crash and his chances of winning the title were dashed. An employee on the track in Hockenheim suffered “a forearm injury” in a fall, but the fall was not related to the accident on the track. The race was initially stopped with a red flag and continued after a lengthy clean-up work.

Victory was secured by the Austrian Lucas Auer (Mercedes), the nephew of the former Formula 1 driver and current DTM boss Gerhard Berger, putting himself in a brilliant position before the last race on Sunday (1.30 p.m.). He has 147 points, just two fewer than leader Sheldon van der Linde of South Africa, who finished second in the BMW on Saturday. Former champion Rene Rast only has a small chance with 128 points.

Porsche driver Preining collided with David Schumacher, both of whom slid into the barriers at high speed. Pilots driving behind could not avoid it. In the event of an impact, the engine of Olsen’s Porsche was thrown onto the track and briefly caught fire.
