But Lada keeps running – Renault is closing the plant in Moscow after all

All the major automakers have gone out of business with Russia because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. All? No not all. Renault is still active, but not solely responsible. Because the Russian brand Avtovaz is only two-thirds owned by the French. However, Renault’s own plant in Moscow will remain closed until further notice.

Renault cars for the Russian market were manufactured at this plant. So far, production there was only partially stopped “due to logistical difficulties and missing components,” it was announced. From now on, however, the assembly lines are definitely to stand still. In the two Avtovaz locations in Togliatti and Izhevsk, work will continue as far as possible, among other things, Lada cars roll off the assembly line there. “We also have a responsibility for over 40,000 employees,” said a spokeswoman. Renault is not the only owner: Avtovaz is 100 percent owned by the joint venture “LADA Auto Holding”, which is 67.69% owned by the Renault Group and 32.31% by the Russian state company Rostec.Regarding this holding “ Renault Group is reviewing available options taking into account the current environment, while acting responsibly towards its 45,000 employees in Russia,” the statement said to around three percent, the group announced on Wednesday evening. So far, the target has been at least four percent. Sales in Russia account for around 18% of the total volume (number of vehicles sold) of the Renault Group in 2021 (482,264 vehicles sold). Of these, Lada accounted for 350,714 vehicles sold (20.9% market share in Russia), and Renault for 131,550 vehicles sold (7.9% market share in Russia). Avtovaz sells 90% of its vehicles on the local Russian market, 10% are mainly exported to the CIS countries. Production of Renault cars in Russia is 100% intended for Russia and the CIS.
