But more technology – border operations: number of soldiers is reduced

The army is reducing the number of assistant soldiers at the Burgenland border – in return, however, technical surveillance is being expanded.

Neither the military command of Burgenland nor the Ministry of Defense wanted to quantify how many soldiers would be withdrawn. At the beginning of 2023, around 750 soldiers were deployed in Burgenland. The lower number of soldiers is to be compensated for by the increased use of technical devices such as thermal imaging cameras, radar and drones. Ministry spokesman Michael Bauer does not give details on this and also on the reduction in soldiers to the APA with reference to the smuggler organizations: “They read along. However, more technology means that fewer personnel can be deployed.” More time for military training of recruits Bauer emphasizes that the measure will improve the military training of conscripts. In addition, the number of refugee arrests has recently fallen. Burgenland’s military commander, Gernot Gasser, assures that the end of the assistance mission in Burgenland is “a long way away”.
