“But what did you just do???” : the day James Cameron shocked the Oscars

In 1998, James Cameron triumphed at the Oscars with “Titanic”. A ceremony during which he released in mondovision a “I’m The King Of the World” far from being unanimous…

Along with Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, it is the most awarded film in history at the Oscars. You have it ? We are obviously talking about Titanic, which triumphed at the 70th ceremony of the Hollywood high mass with no less than eleven statuettes on the counter.

The 1998 Oscars therefore represent a milestone in the career of James Cameron, who gave a speech on the occasion that became famous, punctuated by a vibrant “I’m The King Of The World!”, obvious reference to the film worn by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Which was not well received at the time, the director being accused of showing a certain condescension…

A quarter of a century later, James Cameron looked back on this moment like no other at the microphone of The Hollywood Reporter. For him, there was no lack of humility in this heartfelt cry on the stage of the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

“I started to realize that it was a problem when Warren Beatty looked at me backstage with the air of saying “What did you just do ???””says the Canadian filmmaker.

“I realized that the problem was that it was too referential and considered prideful”continues Cameron. “Not just saying ‘I’m king of the world’ per se, but quoting your own movie as if every person in the audience was a big fan when a lot of people in the audience didn’t have voted for Titanic. You can’t assume that as you won, you won in a big way.”

“In my mind it was a celebration, just showing how I felt in the moment”concludes Cameron. “I was talking to my parents. If you look closely, I say ‘Mom, Dad, I know you’re watching me’. I said ‘I can’t tell you how I feel any other way than to say I I feel like the king of the world!” Saying that was just a way of telling my parents that I felt good, that’s all.”

Titanic: freeze frame at 3 o’clock and 6 minutes, and take a good look at the hands of this clock!

James Cameron was back at the Oscars this Sunday with Avatar: The Waterway, nominated four times. The feature film phenomenon, which totals nearly 2.3 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, won the statuette for Best visual effects.
