"But when it smiles": The first baby year – these pictures show what nobody is talking about

A lot is told about motherhood. But there are a few absurd situations that nobody talks about. Some have to do with excrement. Others with our body. Or sheer powerlessness.

When the Scottish illustrator Lucy Scott became a mother, she regularly captured such situations in small sketches.

She herself experienced the time with baby as a wonderful, magical year. "But you don't need a drawing for the crazy love you suddenly feel – most parents take that for granted."

The hard moments that she wanted to document are more exciting. "The things you don't read about in parenting books," Scott told the Huffington Post.

Her drawings have now also been published in German in a book: "But when it smiles" is absolutely honest and with dry humor.

And now have fun with the illustrations!
