But where has Blizzard’s mysterious survival game gone?

In 2022, Blizzard announced a survival game. During the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2023, the company did not choose to talk about it again.

He’s the big absentee from the BlizzCon opening ceremony. In January 2022, Blizzard, then in turmoil, formalized a new project: a survival game with very mysterious contours. At the time, players were still waiting for the launches ofOverwatch 2 and of Diablo IV and we wondered why the company was lifting the veil on such a title without providing any concrete details.

Many of us then said that BlizzCon 2023, which started on November 3 and the first in physics since 2019, would be the ideal event to show this game which does not even have a name. But no. Blizzard focused on its sure values: new content for Overwatch 2a teaser for the first expansion of Diablo IV and a trio of extensions for World of Warcraft. No trace of this project, not even the shadow of an artwork or a reassuring phrase to remind us that it exists. A one more thing would have even done the trick, concluding the opening ceremony in a good way.

Blizzard still plays the mystery card with its survival game

Was this project revealed too early by Blizzard? Everything suggests so, since the initial timing was far from ideal. The company had just learned of its takeover by Microsoft, now confirmed, while it was still trying to restore its image after stories of sexual harassment and assault that led to a complaint from the State of California.

Blizzard tends to always rely on its strong brands — Warcraft, Diablo And StarCraft (Overwatch to a lesser extent). However, it must launch new ones from time to time to prove to its community that creativity is eternally part of its DNA. Overwatch is its latest 100% new license. It was launched in 2016, which is starting to date.

Today, this mysterious project looks more like a note of intent, made official much too early — like so many others before (hello The Elder Scrolls VI). What do we know about him? That he will take his place in a “ new universe », within which we will have to survive. Blizzard promised “a vast realm of possibilities, waiting to be explored », accessible on PC and console. In the absence of news, we are rather saying to ourselves that this description is not worth much. Sooner or later Blizzard will have to communicate about it, this vagueness being anything but reassuring.
