If you left Chrome for edge from the perspective of staying away from Google, then you’ll be glad to hear that Google Docs may be installing without your permission.

While Firefox goes to version 115, Microsoft Edge is acting up.

Privacy concerns on Edge

Last April, we learned that Microsoft Edge was going to have a very practical feature. This will more precisely allow users of the browser to edit images directly where they are sought. In other words, you no longer need to open third-party editing software to modify the framing or lighting of an image, since all of this can be done from Edge. However, we later learned that this feature raised some privacy issues.

A few months earlier, we also learned that a bug in Microsoft Edge was transmitting search history to Bing… Anyway, today we discovered that the Edge browser forces the installation of a Google extension from of a number of users. But what could possibly be going on? To be honest, we don’t know exactly… Maybe it’s a feature under development?

When the Google Docs extension lands in Edge… and installs without your permission

Recently, Microsoft Edge customers have had to deal with a relatively problematic situation: as reported by the specialized media Neowin, the browser installs the Google Docs Offline extension against its users’ wishes. As a reminder, this is a Chrome Web Store application that allows you to edit documents without an Internet connection. If one could first think of a bug or an error (Chrome and Edge are both part of the Chromium project), the mention “Installed by Microsoft Edge” ultimately suggests the opposite.

Since the Google Docs Offline extension is not officially part of Edge, this phenomenon has us perplexed. Also, while it initially only seemed to affect Canary users, it would have also started appearing in the stable version of Microsoft Edge. Fortunately, if you are one of those affected by this force installation, you can manually remove the extension by going to edge://extensions and then clicking “Remove”.
