Meta is reportedly changing its approach to online shopping on Instagram.

The Shop tab, which appeared two years ago, allows users to make purchases without leaving the app. While the popularity of this service is not proven, the tab concerned has disappeared from a few users. Its deletion could give us clues to a possible change of course on the side of Instagram.

Instagram Shopping will soon be replaced

Replaced by the notifications tab, access to Instagram Shopping is moved to another menu, among the application settings or access to saved publications. Anne Yeh, spokesperson for Meta, confirms that these changes are part of a limited test: As part of our ongoing work to simplify your Instagram experience, we’re testing some changes to the main navigation bar at the bottom of the app with a small number of people. »

According to an internal memo, these changes should be effective for all users during 2023. Indeed, Instagram would seem to be changing its approach to e-commerce by deploying a new, less personalized shopping feature called “Tab Lite”. Instagram Shopping, without disappearing completely, should be redesigned to boost the company’s advertising revenue.

However, Meta is still rolling out new features around commerce. We find in particular an update of the messaging system which allows professionals to directly manage sales by private messages. Anne Yeh adds: “ Commerce remains important to Instagram as we continue to make it easier to discover and buy products across the app, whether it’s feed, stories, reels, or innovations like the direct shopping and drops. »
