Buying an iPhone 15 but still want your Lightning port? Apple has a dongle for you

Here is the USB-C-to-Lightning dongle for €35. Apple/ZDNET

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have been revealed, and here’s something new in terms of connectivity. First of all, USB-C is better than Lightning now that Apple has been forced to adopt the standard.

Who would’ve believed that ? Well, I think most of us already knew that.

But getting rid of a port, whether by choice or because Apple must comply with European law, is an opportunity to sell customers another dongle.

This dongle will also work with iPads and iPad Pros

Apple loves dongles and as expected, here is the USB-C to Ligtning dongle. At €35.

The dongle features a “braided cable for durability” and supports charging up to 24W. According to Apple, this dongle allows users to connect Lightning accessories to a USB-C compatible iPhone or iPad to support three functions: charging, data and audio.

Besides the return of the Lightning port on the new iPhone 15, this dongle will also work with iPads and iPad Pros which were the first to move to USB-C a few years ago.

Towards a generalization of USB-C to Lightning dongles

Many of you are wondering if a dongle – or a new car – is required for CarPlay to work.

Good news. According to Apple, although you can use the USB-C to Lightning dongle with wired CarPlay “in most vehicles,” “certain combinations of adapters, cables, and vehicle entertainment systems” may cause issues with the connection Wired CarPlay. In this case, you can use a USB cable to connect your car directly to the iPhone 15’s USB-C port.

This is a roundabout way of saying that it’s probably better to use a cable rather than the dongle.

I also expect the market to be flooded with cheaper versions of this dongle. While I avoid cheap and generic products, I expect the big accessory names to offer something similar at a slightly lower price than Apple offers for this dongle.
