By the way, why is Bluesky called Bluesky?

Born in 2019, the Bluesky project seeks to create a social network like Twitter, but decentralized, with an open protocol. Its name, by the way, refers to the famous microblogging site.

Bluesky is the social network that Twitter should have been if it had been decentralized. This is in a nutshell what this initiative is, which has been enjoying brand new attention since the spring of 2023. The two platforms have the same parent: the American Jack Dorsey. And obviously, Bluesky was named to make an understated reference to Twitter.

Bluesky opted for a name that echoes Twitter

That’s what Jack Dorsey rightly suggested, responding to a user who asked him if the name “Bluesky” symbolizes the liberation of Twitter, thanks to the use of an open and decentralized protocol. Twitter, whose logo represents a blue bird, would be “caged”, due to its centralized architecture. It would therefore be a question of freeing him, in a way.

Hence a name like “Bluesky”, which means “Blue Sky” in English. The bird representing the social network would thus fly without constraint thanks to Bluesky. At least, the idea behind the community site. Because if Twitter, in the hands of Elon Musk, is not on the path to decentralization, Bluesky has embarked on this path.

In fact, the profile picture Bluesky currently uses on Twitter shows a bird in the sky. The company logo on the official website also shows a blue background with a flight of several white-silhouetted birds. Given the genealogical links between the two services, it is impossible that this is fortuitous.
