It is a brand still unknown to the general public in France, but not for long. The Chinese car manufacturer BYD (for build your dreams, “build your dreams”), intends to make itself known on the European market and dethrone its main competitor, Tesla. In 2022, it manufactured 900,000 electric cars (compared to 1.3 million for Tesla) and, in the first half of 2023, it has already produced some 600,000.
BYD is the first Chinese automaker to emerge with such vigor globally. Its main asset: it manufactures almost everything. “Apart from the tires and the windows, when you have a BYD, everything comes from BYD: the components, the batteries, the body and the engine”explains Jean-Michel Normand, automotive journalist at World.
