Customers of Caisse d’Épargne and Banque Populaire establishments, which are part of the same group, have no longer been able to access their accounts since Thursday morning. Customers are getting frustrated, some fear a cyberattack, a hypothesis refuted by the bank.

Contacted by Clubic, the BPCE group responded to us this Thursday at the end of the morning, having met “ technical problems » which temporarily impacted « access to our customers’ accounts and online payment », adding that it was being resolved, which several Internet users confirm, with a return to normal which now seems widespread. The bank adds and confirms that this is not a cyberattack.

Just a few days after the cyberattack suffered by Crédit Agricole, two other banking establishments, Caisse d’Épargne and Banque Populaire, from the BPCE group, saw their sites and applications break down this Thursday morning. The company mentioned “ a technical error ” Or ” a general problem “. Customers were simply no longer able to access their accounts and personal space, whether from the application or the website. But what really happened?

The Caisse d’Épargne and Banque Populaire paralyzed by a “general problem”, but by what exactly?

This Thursday, February 15, 2024, the reports numbered in the hundreds! The Caisse d’Épargne and the Banque Populaire, which own the BPCE group, had a big problem. Between 8:45 a.m. (approximately) and 11:15 a.m. this morning, it was impossible for customers to access their bank account or personal space from the sites and applications of the two banks.

The two banks, which had remained silent for a long time, spoke of having had “ a general problem » and indicated that they had mobilized their technical teams. Earlier, some Internet users reported to us a “ Technical problem ” or a ” update ”, according to advisors located all over France.

Regarding the update, it is difficult to imagine that it was scheduled in the middle of the morning, at a time when many French people use their bank cards or browse their accounts. We can therefore deduce that a potential update would be due to an unforeseen element. But is this really an update, or was access to the accounts cut off due to malicious external intervention? The BPCE group indicates that this is not a computer attack, but we do not have any more information, at this time, on the real reasons for the problem.

Worrying reports from Internet users who feared the worst

The more inconvenient hypothesis of an external attack could unfortunately not be ruled out, given the timing and scale of the problem. On the social network X.com, several customers were able to confirm the problem to us. Marin, aka @Zechatkoala, also gives us a screenshot of what customers saw when they tried to connect to their account, here that of the Caisse d’Épargne. Darlito, still on the social network, writes to us “ that payment by credit card is also impossible ”, online in any case.

On the Web, testimonies have poured in. Lili wrote that she had “not no information from the bank », same thing for Isa. More worrying, Amandine explained on a reporting platform that she had received an SMS from her bank telling her “ a change of domicile » for its banking beneficiaries, “ what I never asked for “, she explains, now wondering if the banks “ did not have a huge hack of their data “.

While some grew impatient and others feared the worst, the Caisse d’Épargne and Banque Populaire still took time to react. No doubt the technical teams were on all fronts.
