California prepares for the passage of Hilary

It should cause flash floods, mudslides, or isolated tornadoes, warn the authorities.

Residents of southern California are preparing for Sunday’s passage of Hilary, a hurricane that should be downgraded to a tropical storm to reach the United States coasts, according to meteorologists. It would still be a first since 1939, when the last tropical storm hit the region, during which nearly 100 people died.

On the shores of Long Beach, where the 1939 storm precisely hit, residents were filling sandbags in an attempt to limit the damage from floods that could affect their homes.

California Emergency Services Director Nancy Ward reminded residents to prepare for an evacuation and especially “to evacuate immediately” in case of request.

US President Joe Biden has urged “all people in the path of this storm to take precautions and listen to the advice of national and local authorities”.
