Pistorius: Indo-Pacific should position itself against Russian war of aggression

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius does not make any clear statements at the Asian Security Conference calling for a Shangri-La dialogue. Now he is pointing one towards the Indo-Pacific countries. From them he calls for more attitude, especially in relation to the Ukraine war.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has called on the states in the Indo-Pacific to take a clear stance against attacks on the international security architecture, such as Russia’s war against Ukraine. “This is incredibly dangerous for the whole world: if Russia wins, the message to revisionist powers in the world will be that aggression and the unprovoked use of military force are acceptable and can be successful. Here in the Indo-Pacific, too,” said the SPD politician in Singapore at the Asian security conference Shangri-La Dialogue. He thanked many states in the region who had made it clear that the international community did not accept this illegal war.

Pistorius told the representatives of more than 40 countries that the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine was a “historic turning point in our foreign and security policy.” “We commit to taking more responsibility for our own security and the security of our allies and partners,” said the Secretary of Defense. “This includes rethinking our arms export policy, especially when it comes to supporting partner nations with their legitimate claims to self-defense.”

Pistorius called for protecting the rules-based international order wherever it is threatened. This also includes the right to free navigation. Germany is ready to support any bilateral or multilateral confidence-building measures, said Pistorius. He mentioned the exchange of information and the observation of military exercises, inspections of military facilities and arms control agreements. He said, “We need the rule of law instead of rule by the rule of thumb.”
