Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is getting new guidelines for punishing rules violations in the game. Among other things, there is also a new system called “Limited Matchmaking”.

According to the official blog post, this is apparently a special form of “shadowban”. This is a term for restricting various features of an account due to violating guidelines.

“Limited Matchmaking” explained

You can imagine “Limited Matchmaking” as a separate lobby. If you are assigned to this special lobby, you can only compete against players whose accounts are also in this lobby.

As Activision announces in the blog post, there are various behaviors and violations that can lead to an assignment to “Limited Matchmaking.”

  • “Extreme or Repeated Violations”
  • “spoofing”
  • “Circumventing Security”
  • “Cheating/Modding/Hacking”
  • “Pirated Content”
  • “Unsupported Peripheral Devices and Applications”
  • “Boosting”
  • “Glitching”
  • “Offensive Behavior”
  • “Griefing”
  • Improperly Obtained DLC
  • “Decompiling or Reverse Engineering of Game Data”
  • “Malicious Reporting”

Depending on how Activision views your violation of the rules, your account may also receive a ban. There are temporary bans of 48 hours to two weeks as well as permanent bans for extreme rule violations.

Affected games

According to the blog post, these new guidelines apply to all existing Call of Duty titles starting with Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019). In addition, all upcoming console and PC titles in the shooter series should also use these new guidelines.

Since the release of Call of Duty 2024 is probably still almost a year away, Activision could potentially introduce new guidelines by then. In the meantime, we are already informing you about the setting that awaits you in the successor to Modern Warfare 3.
