The soap opera of the redemption ofActivision-Blizzard by Microsoft is not yet complete, especially as the competition regulatory entities are currently studying the operation before definitively validating it. To reassure the players and the competent authorities, Phil Spencer thus communicated last week to specify that the takeover would go in the direction of the public, by making certain licenses more accessible in particular via mobiles. He had added to The Verge which he also signed a partnership with playstation to take out the call of duty on its consoles “for at least several additional years beyond the current contract”.
“In January, we provided a signed agreement to Sony to secure Call of Duty release on PlayStation, with feature and content parity, for at least several additional years beyond the current Sony contract, an offer that goes well. beyond typical gaming industry deals,” Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a statement to The Verge.
The “current contract” would be the one concerning the next 3 games, namely Modern Warfare II, Warzone 2.0 and the following main episode, which might not be released before 2024. And the extension of the contract mentioned by Phil Spencer, it would be a priori an additional 3-year partnership to bring future call of duty at the house of playstationuntil 2026 or 2027 so. This is Jim Ryan, current president of Sony Interactive Entertainmentwho declared it to GamesIndustry, in order to wash his dirty laundry in public following the statements of Phil Spencer. He thinks that this 3-year contract is “inadequate on many levels and did not take into account the impact on [ses] players »and would not have appreciated that Microsoft gives himself the beautiful role in this story.
I didn’t intend to comment on what I understood to be a private business discussion, but I feel the need to set the record straight because Phil Spencer brought this to the public forum.
Microsoft didn’t offer Call of Duty to stay on PlayStation until three years after the current deal between Activision and Sony ended. After nearly 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to consider the impact on our players. We want to ensure PlayStation players that they continue to receive the highest quality Call of Duty experience and Microsoft’s proposal flies in the face of that principle.
This should strain relations between the two giants of the video game industry and also perhaps change things. Will competition regulators take into account the fact that playstation feels wronged in this story, and questioning the takeover ofActivision-Blizzard ? Is this a maneuver to force Microsoft to take out the call of duty for even longer with his opponent? Or are we going to face an early break between call of duty and playstation ? Still, for the moment, if the famous extension of the contract has been signed (nothing says otherwise), we would have CODE on PS5 and potentially its successor for another 4 or 5 years.
