Caltys, the 1st player in ERL history, joins Valiance

Unfortunately, it is clear that the world of esports — and especially that of League of Legends — is still a universe mainly reserved for men, and although things are changing little by little over the years – as evidenced by the female scene of Valorant – the progress we are witnessing is still minimal. However, day after day, things are unblocking and, beyond changing mentalities, we are witnessing phenomena that prove that women have their place in this ecosystem, just like men.

If certain arguments against it remain valid in the world of sport, nothing justifies the absence of diversity in that of esport, other than the habits and practices of the past. And it is perhaps this mentality that encouraged the Croatian team Valiance to recruit Maya “Caltys” Henckel as ADC, making her the first woman in history to play in the European Regional League on a mixed roster.

A veteran of the French scene

Forget Vaevictis Esport and their risky communication stunt, because Maya “Caltys” Henckel is far from playing outside of his league — quite the contrary. This young player aged only 19 discovered League of Legends in Season 5 and like many she grinded the LP, reaching the rank of Master in 2019, then that of GrandMaster last year.

Playing ADC since Season 7, she began her professional career in 2018 alongside the Excel Ladies, before joining the French team Out of the Blue in 2019 and to win under its banner the GIRLGAMER 2019 Esports Festival in Dubai. Following this adventure, Caltys made an express visit to Resolve Academy, a team present in the Nordic Championship (UKLC) which includes her in its women’s roster but never really gives her the opportunity to play in the league.

The following year, Caltys found a place at 1. ECF eV, a team committed to Prime League Division 2, but there again she only makes an express passage, before joining Team Revive, a 100% female team committed to the Women’s Cup 2021 (a European championship reserved for women). However, this year, Caltys is trying his luck again in a mixed team within Valiance in order to play in the European Balkan League, and to try to win his place for the European Masters.

Today, the young ADC is playing its first match in the ERL. Introducing the 2022 EBL Spring Split, the Valiance will face Nexus KTRL at 7 p.m. — and we obviously wish them luck.

They are still rare, but the women who play League of Legends do exist. Some of them are even professional players – meeting with Shiny and Freyja, two former Out of the Blue players.
