Tennis star is on the run – or is he?

It’s about money and a lawsuit over possibly fake vaccination certificates: Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi is said to be in a lot of trouble. Now she is said to be on the run, write Italian media. Is that correct?

Camila Giorgi is on the run, according to Italian media. The Argentine-Italian tennis player, who has won four singles titles and around six million euros in prize money in her career, is said to have tax problems in Italy. Giorgi played her last match on the professional tour in Miami at the end of March; the 32-year-old had no chance against the Polish world-class player Iga Swiatek. Then Giorgi, who had once made it to number 26 in the world rankings, disappeared.

As the sports newspaper “La Gazzetta dello Sport” reports, among others, the Italian tax authorities want to send documents to the tennis player. This is supposed to be about outstanding tax debts. Giorgi, who also runs her own underwear line “Giomila,” is said to have not filed an income tax return. It is also said that several family members – mother, father and two brothers – should explain “gaps” in their tax returns to the Guardia di Finanza. Giorgi is now said to be in the USA.

Can no longer be reached

It is not known whether this is true. Because the tennis player had disappeared. On May 7, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which is responsible for managing the anti-doping program in tennis, announced that Giorgi had ended her professional career. Giorgi did not personally communicate her momentous decision to her 700,000 Instagram followers, who the “tennis beauty”, as the tabloids call her, otherwise reliably provided with pictures and insights into her professional and model life.

The story becomes even more mysterious because the player could no longer be reached by the WTA, the organization of professional tennis players, write various media. The known phone numbers of the player and her brother Amadeus, who took care of the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist’s public relations, were dead.

Late on Saturday evening, the missing person contacted her fans: “I ask you to follow my Instagram page for truthful information, because so far many fake articles have appeared,” wrote Giorgi on Instagram. But the news of her resignation is true. “It will be a pleasure for her to share my life with you in the future, and we will continue this journey together. With much love, Camila.”

Giorgi did not respond to the allegations in Italy, where she lives with her family in Tuscany. She also didn’t reveal where she is now. What is clear, however, is that she has to appear in Verona on July 16th: Then she will have to answer in court because she is said to have traveled around the world with a fake vaccination certificate during the Corona restrictions. Then the Italian tax authorities might also have an opportunity to serve their documents.
