Violent forest fires are raging in southern Italy. The fire seems uncontrollable, is rolling through the regions, devastating entire landscapes. It was precisely during this state of emergency that an arsonist set to work in Campania.
The man, a 50-year-old farmer from the region, was filmed by a surveillance camera. The shot shows how he slowly lights the plants on the side of a path with a lighter.
The flames spread rapidly and, according to the local police, destroy around two hectares of oak forest and pastures. The farmer’s motive: he wanted to clear the area in order to use the fields for cattle breeding.
Up to 10 years imprisonment
The police published the surveillance video last Friday. The arsonist has since been arrested. He faces 4 to 10 years imprisonment.
Fires have been blazing in southern Italy and on the islands since the end of July. Heat, drought and winds ensured that the flames could spread quickly over and over again. The flames raged in nature reserves, but also in tourist areas on the coasts. (hah / SDA)
