There are campsites like sand by the sea – also in Germany. But which are the most popular? Pincamp.dethe ADAC camping portal, has determined the top ten in Germany based on user data and ratings.

1st place: Camping and holiday park Wulfener Hals, Fehmarn

The most popular German campsite – the Camping- und Ferienpark Wulfener Hals – is located directly on the Wulfener Hals on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn. The complex thrives on its varied entertainment offerings and its unbeatable location on the Burger Inland Lake and the Baltic Sea. Water sports enthusiasts in particular get their money’s worth here and can plunge into the cool water with a kite or surfboard.

Equipment is offered by the large surfing school (kite surfing, canoeing and stand-up paddling). There is also a diving school – dives to the wrecks of the island are possible for those who are interested. Landlubbers will also get their money’s worth in the extensive complex. There is a golf course, a miniature golf course, numerous playgrounds and a bicycle rental. The latter offers the opportunity to explore the island flexibly and close to nature by bike.

  • Prices: Pitch 35.11 – 61.97 euros including two adults (visitor’s tax 2.00 euros), per additional person 12.90 euros, children from 2 years 5.80 euros, dog 9.00 euros; more info below www.pincamp.de/camping-wulfener-hals

2nd place: Südsee-Camp, Wietzendorf

The Südsee-Camp in Wietzendorf in Lower Saxony is a real family paradise. The decidedly child-friendly resort offers action, fun and animation for young and old with a climbing park, a spacious bathing paradise with a bathing lake, an indoor area including a wave pool, tropical landscape and wild water canal as well as numerous sports fields – from football to volleyball.

If you have had enough romping, you can take part in one of the numerous day trips – for example to Hamburg – or take part in a guided hike or bike tour. The natural location offers the ideal conditions to switch off and ground yourself.

  • Prices: stand 30.00-50.00 euros, adults 10.00 euros, children 2 to 12 years 7 euros (up to 1 year included); more info below www.pincamp.de/suedsee-camp

3rd place: Strandcamping Waging, Waging by the lake

This large campsite with 638 marked pitches is located on the Waginger See, the warmest lake in Upper Bavaria. The extensive meadow area with tall deciduous trees and bushes borders directly on the lake – the bathing and beach area offers large lawns as well as bathing platforms and diving boards over a length of 400 meters. Because the pebble beach is partially steep, guests can easily get into the water via stairs in some places.

The campsite is particularly dog-friendly: holidaymakers who bring their four-legged friends with them can relax on a separate sunbathing lawn – there is even an agility area on the site where four-legged friends can really let off steam.

Also: In the neighborhood there is a boat and bicycle rental, a mini golf course, a sailing and surfing school and tennis courts – even with indoor courts if the weather is not playing along. During the summer holidays there is an animation program for children and adults.

4th place: Camping & Ferienpark Falkensteinsee, Ganderkesee

The holiday park Falkensteinsee impresses with its idyllic location around the lake of the same name in northern Germany between Oldenburg and Bremen. Guests feel like they are at the sea here, because several bathing bays have a sandy beach. The flat entry points and the large sunbathing areas are also ideal for families with children.

Dogs are also welcome in the holiday park. There is even a separate section of beach and an obstacle course so that the four-legged friends can really let off steam.

5th place: Campingpark Ostseebad Kühlungsborn

Kilometers of sandy beach right in front of you – the location of the campsite on the Baltic Sea coast, more precisely in the Bay of Mecklenburg, could not be better. Since 1996, the town of 7,000 inhabitants has had the official title of “seaside resort”. The longest lake promenade in Germany runs there with a length of 3.1 kilometers.

The campsite itself is about 600 meters from the center in a partially natural dune and forest area. A total of 550 parking spaces are available to holidaymakers, most of which are subdivided and generously sized at 80 to 150 square meters. There is also a restaurant, an additional sanitary area with a children’s pool and a wellness area with a Finnish sauna, steam bath and infrared cabin.

A course program for adults with yoga, Pilates, Zumba and archery as well as an animation program for children with handicrafts, hikes, torchlight processions and campfire romance ensure sports and entertainment.

6th place: Camping Hopfensee, Allgäu

The Hopfensee campsite is located on the idyllic lake of the same name in the Allgäu. Thanks to its large spa area with sauna, steam bath and heated indoor pool, it is one of the leading European locations for spa camping and wellness.

But families also get their money’s worth here: children can let off steam in the indoor play hall or in the dwarf pool, and there are also football pitches and tennis courts on site, as well as a restaurant and a self-service shop. The field is also open in winter: the soccer field is then transformed into an ice rink and the surrounding area into a single winter and skier’s paradise.

7th place: Camping Wirthshof, Lake Constance

The Wirtshof campsite is located on a plateau in the hinterland of Lake Constance, about ten kilometers from Friedrichshafen. The elevated position even allows you to look down on the lake. The 238 parking spaces are located between hedges, deciduous trees and the fruit trees typical of the region – right next to the associated hotel.

The site is a paradise for families with children: Here the little ones can let off steam in an adventure playground with slides, a rope course, mini golf or in the pool – for rainy days there is even a beautiful indoor playground.

Tip: The GuckinsLand hiking trail that leads to Gehrenberg, which offers a spectacular view of Lake Constance and the Alps, runs right past the facility.

8th place: Alfsee Holiday and Adventure Park, Rieste, Osnabrücker Land

The Alfsee Holiday and Adventure Park lives up to its name, because families with children don’t have to worry about boredom here. In addition to a lake with a bathing beach, playgrounds, go-kart track and water ski facility, this camping park in the Osnabrück region also offers children’s entertainment, ranging from handicrafts to a children’s disco and clown show.

A special feature of this park, which has a total of 375 caravan pitches, is the Germanenland: a separate area with numerous pretty rental chalets and a spacious swimming pool and wellness complex that was built in the style of a Germanic village. There is also a supermarket on the site, as well as a café and restaurant, a snack bar and a bistro.

9th place: Nordseecamping Schillig, Friesland

This spacious campsite with 700 pitches is located directly on the North Sea coast and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Campers have a 300 meter long and up to 100 meter wide sandy beach plus sunbathing area directly in front of the camper door or in front of the tent. The bathing resort of Schillig is only a few minutes’ walk from the camp and offers a wonderful dune beach and the best conditions for water sports such as stand-up paddling, surfing and kite surfing.

Tip for vacationers: Definitely take or rent bicycles and explore Schillig and the dyke line along the coast on a bike tour. Excursions to the East Frisian Islands are also possible, as the ports of departure are not far away.

10th place: Camping and holiday park Havelberge, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

The Havelberge campsite and holiday park with its 312 pitches is located on the shore of the Woblitzsee near Groß Quassow. The complex not only has its own bathing area, but also a marina that offers berths for boats up to twelve meters in length.

There is also an eco bathing pond for children and for all campers who have their four-legged friends with them there is even a section of beach for dogs. In summer, the complex also offers an entertainment program for children. If you want to do something good for yourself, you can also use the Finnish log cabin sauna. Tip: Definitely take part in one of the guided bike and canoe tours.
