Camping in Hessen: These are the most beautiful campsites

Camping holidays in their own country have been very popular not only since Corona – even if you can now travel to many European countries again. In a new series, FOCUS Online presents the most beautiful campsites in every federal state: today Hessen.

1.Fuldaschleife campsite, Guxhagen

It couldn't be more romantic: this three-hectare campsite is located exactly where the Fulda draws its most beautiful arch. Surrounded by meadows and forests, it is located just outside the dreamy village of Guxhagen and offers guests a variety of options.

The region is crisscrossed by a dense network of hiking and biking trails, including the 260 km long Hessian Cycle Route R1, which runs along the Fulda – from the source at the Wasserkuppe to Hann and beyond. Canoeing is also very popular with visitors. A popular destination nearby: the Wilhelmshöhe mountain park in Kassel, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The site itself offers 55 spacious pitches for tourists as well as cozy camping barrels, in which two to three people can spend the night. There is also a good restaurant on site, a playground and a soccer field, as well as an e-bike and canoe rental.

  • Prices and info: Stand 9.50 euros, adults 5.70 euros, children 2-14 years 3.40 euros per night, camping barrel 35 euros for two people plus 10 euros final cleaning; www.pincamp.de/campingplatz-fuldaschleife

2. Nibelungen Camping at the swimming pool, Odenwald

This modern and well-kept campsite is located on the outskirts of Fürth – in the middle of the Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald. The swimming pool is not part of the campsite, but of the community, but it is right next to it. With a large pool, a water slide, diving towers and beach volleyball, it offers lots of fun for the whole family.

The campsite itself is located on a five hectare meadow plot with a slight incline and lots of bushes and trees. The 38 parking spaces, which are between 80 and 100 square meters in size, have electricity, fresh and sewage connections as well as free WiFi – the sanitary facilities are modern and well maintained.

Excursion tips: Vacationers should definitely explore the Lautertal Felsenmeer, a rocky landscape made of dark gray quartz rock, as well as a tour with the solar drain through the Odenwald from Mörlenbach or Wald-Michelbach.

3. Camping and holiday park Teichmann, Vöhl-Herzhausen

This beautiful camping park is located on a park-like meadow area directly at the Edersee in the Hessian Waldeck – with its own beach and sunbathing areas and 285 tourist parking spaces.

Since this is a holiday park, there is no time for boredom: in addition to an entertainment program for children, there is also a mini golf course, giant trampolines, table tennis, pedal boats and a pony farm. Even a gold washing trough, where young guests can dig for sparkling stones, has been set up.

Those who prefer it quieter can explore the surrounding nature on hiking and biking trails. Because the Edersee, one of the largest reservoirs in Europe, belongs to the Kellerwald nature park and winds its way over a distance of 27 kilometers through the hilly, almost fjord-like landscape. Other attractions on the lake: the treetop path, the barrier wall of the lake and Waldeck Castle, a castle complex from the 12th century.

4. Nieder-Mooser See campsite, Hoher Vogelsberg nature park

Bathing, surfing, sailing – the Nieder-Mooser See in the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park is a real insider tip for water sports enthusiasts. Because the wind conditions are so good that both beginners and professionals get their money's worth. Those who want to take courses can do so in the neighboring sailing and surfing schools.

The campsite itself, which offers over 100 pitches for holidaymakers, is right on the lake – including a sandy beach and lawn, which are monitored by the DLRG. Those who do not travel with their own camping equipment rent one of the wooden barrels, which can accommodate up to four people.

The place is ideal for families because there is a lot on offer: in addition to playgrounds and a pirate ship on the beach, entertainers with handicrafts, open-air cinema, night walks as well as volleyball, football or table tennis tournaments ensure a good mood. Tip for hikers: Make sure to take the Vulkanring hiking trail. It leads once around the entire Vogelsberg, Europe's largest extinct volcano.

5. Camping Ulmbachtalsperre, Westerwald

The Ulmbachtalsperre reservoir is located on the eastern slopes of the Westerwald. In the middle of this beautiful landscape protection area, holidaymakers can pitch their tents on a family-run 18 hectare site with a large lawn and sandy beach or spend the night in one of the woody tramps.

These colorful camping houses for a maximum of two people are the perfect alternative to the tent, because they are well insulated and even have an electric heater in case it gets cooler. You don't have to worry about the food here either, because there is a pizzeria on the premises.

Tip: Be sure to bring your bike or hiking shoes to explore this wonderful region and take trips to Greifenstein Castle with its bell museum and the autumn labyrinth, the largest cave system in Hesse.
