Camping is all the rage

This is a paid contribution, presented by the German National Tourist Board

Germany inspires with living customs and a culinary variety from Bavarian beer to Hamburg fish rolls. Do you fancy a stroll through the city? It’s never far to the next town with a medieval picture book look. No matter whether you are a van lifter, caravan traveler or tent camper: between Lake Constance and Sylt, everyone will find their place here with a feel-good guarantee. We present the five most popular camping regions of Ms. and Mr. Schweizer. Let’s camp!

Baden-Württemberg: Forests, wellness and cool cities

For the Swiss, Baden-Württemberg is one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. The northern neighbor is not only a stone’s throw away, the «Schwabeländle» is also a real jack-of-all-trades. In the Black Forest, for example, 24,000 kilometers of hiking trails wind their way over mountains and through valleys – and past almost all campsites. And for your well-being, thermal baths and wellness facilities are spread across the entire state. City fans are drawn to Stuttgart, Freiburg or Ulm – all with campsites close to the city. By the way: “BaWü” has won many awards for sustainable tourism, above all the Swabian Alb region, which has in part been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

Lower Saxony: sea, tranquility and endless expanses

«Feel the vastness!» The official slogan of the state of Lower Saxony hits the nail on the head: In north-west Germany you can sense the infinity. Not only in the North German Plain, but especially when you pitch your tent on the East Frisian coast or make yourself comfortable in a beach chair. Then the view goes over the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea until it is lost in the distant blue. The Wadden Sea itself turns out to be a real biological miracle. It goes without saying that the East Frisian Islands focus on environmental protection and sustainability. The island of Juist, for example, is car-free. On a day trip you can only go across the island in a horse-drawn carriage. Just decelerate.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: In the land of 1000 lakes

Fortunately for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that the Scandinavian glaciers stopped by in the last ice age. As a result, countless lakes have formed in the terminal moraine landscape. It should be 1000. And lucky for campers: on the shores of the Mecklenburg Lake District, life in the Büssli can be enjoyed wonderfully. Swimming, paddling, hiking in the water and strolling through lovely towns. Part of the lake district is protected in the Müritz National Park, one of the most beautiful natural regions in Germany. The sea eagles and ospreys that circling through the air here also know this. Would you like a little Mee (h) r? Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has 1900 kilometers of the Baltic coast. Germany record!

This is how camping works in Germany

There are around 1200 certified campsites and 4200 parking spaces available in Camping-Paradies Deutschland. The latter are free in many places and some offer electricity and water for a fee. All information about Germany as a travel destination and the regions mentioned is available here.

Brandenburg: lakes, virgin forests and solitude

People? You rarely see them in the Uckermark: the region north of Berlin is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Germany. So peace is guaranteed here. And where humans are outnumbered, nature rules. 500 lakes lie between hills and are waiting to be explored by canoe, stand-up paddle or boat. Or would you prefer to walk, on a horse or by bike? You can explore the entire region on two wheels on the 290 kilometer long Uckermark cycle path. A must when visiting the state of Brandenburg is the Grumsin beech forest, a primeval forest that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in autumn it is a colorful hiking paradise.

Schleswig-Holstein: A «Switzerland» in the very north

Switzerland – this is what Germany calls particularly beautiful landscapes. There are said to be over 100 “Swiss”, one of which is Holstein Switzerland between the cities of Kiel and Lübeck in the very north of the country. Softly wooded hills, over 200 lakes, picturesque villages and castles characterize the largest protected area in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Camping is wonderful here. Just like hiking, cycling and paddling. Because: it is never far to water. Schleswig-Holstein lies between the North and Baltic Seas and is home to famous islands. Fehmarn with its Baltic seaside resorts, for example, or chic Sylt. The Halligen, several mini-islands in the Wadden Sea, are also worth a trip.
