Campsites in Saarland: This is the best place to camp

Camping holidays in their own country have been very popular with many people not only since Corona – even if you can now travel to other European countries. In a new series, FOCUS Online presents the most beautiful campsites in every federal state: today the Saarland.

1.Bostalsee campsite, Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park

The 120-hectare Bostalsee in the middle of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Saarland. The 14 hectare camping site of the same name is only about 500 meters from the lake and offers places for 100 motorhomes – the spacious family parking spaces are even parceled out. If you have small children, you can also spend the night in pretty wooden houses in the fairytale village.

The bathing area at the lake is around 500 meters away, and the St. Wedel outdoor swimming pool is 700 meters away. In addition to climbing frames, swings, slides, mini golf and soccer fields, even entertainers will have fun with games, sports and handicrafts during the holidays. Adults can relax in the sauna area with Finnish sauna (90 degrees), organic sauna (60 degrees), heated benches and showers.

Holidaymakers can also shop on the premises: in the bakery there are bread and rolls as well as other groceries, and vending machines such as milk, yoghurt and sausages around the clock. Those who prefer to stop off just have to take a walk to the “Greeks at the lake”, which is open from 11.30 am to 10.30 pm.

2. Camping site and holiday park Losheim am See

Losheim is a municipality on the lake of the same name in the extreme north of the Saarland – in the middle of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. This area is ideal for hikers, because the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, a 410-kilometer long-distance hiking trail, passes right here.

That is why the campsite and holiday park Losheim also offers so-called hiking huts – simple but pretty wooden houses with two single beds. Otherwise, the ten hectare campsite with more than 430 pitches is firmly in the hands of campers.

The beautiful square is located directly on the lake – in addition to bread service, there is also a small restaurant in the entrance area with good traditional cuisine. Excursion tip: Be sure to visit the treetop path on the Saar loop, Germany's most beautiful river loop, and enjoy the view.

  • Prices and info: Stand 17 euros, adults 6 euros, children up to 5 years 2.50 euros, children up to 16 years 4.50 euros, hiking cabins 34 euros per night plus bed linen fee; www.pincamp.de/camping-losheim-am-see

3rd. Camping Walsheim, Gersheim

Camping Walsheim is located in the middle of the Bliesgau Unesco Biosphere Reserve. It was only in August 2018 that the Dutch couple Eric and Marianne Meerdink took over the facility to implement their idea of comfortable camping. In addition to 65 places for long-term campers and 60 tent and caravan places, the couple also built glamping accommodations on the site: These are comfortable, 40-square-meter safari tents with comfortable beds, kitchens and a large terrace area.

The site itself is located in a green valley between two rivers, and the public outdoor pool is right next door. Tip: families with children can enjoy this beautiful landscape on small, guided hiking tours with alpacas, which are held at the Helenenhof in the Mandelbach valley.

Siersburg towers over the village, a ruined castle from the 11th century, from which you can enjoy a great view of this idyllic landscape.

The campsite itself is located between meadows, forest areas and orchards and offers vacationers one thing above all: lots of peace and space. Because the 95 parceled pitches are between 100 and 120 square meters in size and therefore ensure a lot of privacy.

The surrounding area can be wonderfully explored by bike or on foot, as many bike and hiking trails run through the region. A trip to the state capital Saarbrücken, 35 kilometers away, is also worthwhile – whether you stroll through the old town, visit the zoo or the Saarland Museum.
