CAN will take place in Cameroon, assures African Football Confederation

The African Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2020 was won by Egypt.

The African Football Cup (CAN) will be played as planned in Cameroon in January 2022, assured, Tuesday, June 15, in Yaoundé the secretary general of the African Football Confederation (CAF) after rumors on social networks a new withdrawal from the tournament to the host country.

“The CAN will be organized in this magnificent country in January 2022. It is clear”, said Véron Mosengo-Omba, secretary general of CAF, during a press conference organized at the end of a forty-eight hour visit to Cameroon. “I don’t want to repeat that anymore”, he hammered.

The Central African country was to host in 2019 the previous edition of the flagship competition on the continent but the organization had been withdrawn due to the delay in the construction and rehabilitation of the stadiums. Egypt had finally organized the competition.

“World Cup class stadium”

“The work is progressing very well (…) but there are some adjustments to be made”, assured Mr. Mosengo-Omba, who specifies: “The president of CAF [Patrice Motsepé] and the CAF executive committee (…) are satisfied with the work and the organization. “

During his visit, the general secretary of CAF notably visited the Olembé stadium in Yaoundé, where the opening match and the final will be played.

With a capacity of 60,000 seats, this stadium has long fueled controversy due to the delay in construction. “Things are going very well. It is a World Cup class stadium ”, praised Mr. Mosengo-Omba.

The CAN will be played from January 9 to February 6, 2022. Initially scheduled for June, the group draw has been postponed due to “Logistical problems linked to Covid-19” in August, but the precise date remains to be determined, according to Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, Cameroonian Minister of Sports.
